Disaster Preparedness Network

Background

According to the data from His Majesty's Government (HMG) 18,000 persons have lost their lives within 17 years from 1983 to 1998. The average physical loss due to damage from various disasters in Nepal is equivalent to 3.6 million Rupees (48,000 US$) per day. Fire, Flood/Landslide and Epidemics are frequent events that occur almost every year which results in annual loss of life and property. Devastating earthquakes are relatively less frequent but high intensity. Entire area of Nepal sits astride the boundary of Indian and Tibetian plate which makes the entire area of Nepal equally vulnerable to Earthquakes. Other disasters affecting Nepal are Avalanche, Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF), Hailstorm, Storm, Road Accidents, Stampede etc. Though some institutions have initiated Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Measures as their major thrust in dealing with disasters; most of the people in Nepal still take disasters as a spell of God and or an isolated event. Disaster Risk Management is confined to Response activities.
